Thurso Tranquility Review
The Thurso Surf Tranquility punches well above its price tag — dual-layer rigidity, a full-length deck pad, and a carbon-shaft paddle in one box is genuinely hard to beat near $500. It's slightly narrower than the widest yoga-only boards, but for most paddlers that trade-off is worth it.
We’ve tested a lot of inflatable SUPs in the yoga-and-all-around category, and most of them make you choose: either you get a wide, stable platform for flows and balancing poses, or you get a board that actually paddles well. The Thurso Surf Tranquility is one of the few boards that genuinely does both without asking you to gut a premium-board budget.
At around $500, the Tranquility ships as a full kit — carbon-shaft paddle, dual-chamber pump, backpack — on a board built with dual-layer drop-stitch construction. That means real rigidity underfoot, not the hammock feel you get from single-layer boards that flex every time you shift your weight mid-Warrior III. We spent several sessions on flat water, a light chop, and one windy morning where it had no business being out — and we came away with a clear picture of what this board does well and where it falls short.

On the water — yoga & all-around
The Tranquility’s 10’8″ x 34″ x 6″ dimensions are the first thing to understand. Thirty-four inches wide is stable — most paddlers, including beginners, will feel steady standing still or moving through poses. That said, some dedicated yoga boards push to 35″ or 36″, and you do feel that extra inch when you’re in a low, wide stance or working on balance drills. If your primary goal is a rock-solid yoga platform and you’re not bothered about glide, those wider boards have an edge.
For everyone else, 34″ is the sweet spot. The board tracks cleanly, responds well to a forward stroke, and doesn’t waddle the way some ultra-wide shapes do. We took it out on a reservoir with light wind chop and it handled the conditions confidently. At 10’8″ it’s maneuverable enough for a casual SUP lesson or a morning paddle around a lake — it’s not just a yoga mat that floats.
The 6-inch thickness is standard for this class, and at full inflation (15 PSI, per Thurso’s spec) the board is genuinely rigid underfoot. We did the thumb-press test mid-session: almost no give. That matters for yoga because a soft board telegraphs every micro-shift in your stance, which makes balancing poses harder than they need to be.
Construction & the carbon paddle
Thurso Surf uses a dual-layer drop-stitch construction on the Tranquility — two layers of PVC fused over the woven core rather than a single-layer skin with a thin laminate. The practical effect is a stiffer board that holds its shape session after session and is substantially more resistant to puncture. According to American Canoe Association guidelines, SUP stability and control are directly tied to board rigidity, and the dual-layer build delivers that reliably.
The included carbon-shaft paddle is the standout value item in this package. Carbon shafts are lighter and stiffer than fiberglass or aluminum — they reduce arm fatigue on longer paddles and give you cleaner power transfer on each stroke. At $500 for the whole kit, including a carbon paddle, you’re getting something that brands typically charge $150–$200 extra for as an upgrade. The blade is plastic, which is a reasonable compromise at this price, but the shaft is the part that matters most for feel.
The dual-chamber pump is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade over the standard single-chamber pumps most kits include. The second chamber kicks in for the high-pressure final push to 15 PSI, which means less effort and less time before you’re on the water. It’s a small detail that adds up across a whole season of inflating.
Deck & features
The full-length deck pad is the feature that makes the Tranquility worth considering for yoga specifically. Most iSUPs have a 60–70% coverage pad with bare PVC at the nose and tail. The Tranquility’s pad runs nearly the full length of the board, which means you can step forward for a lunge, back for a pose, or lie down for a stretch without landing on slick PVC. The traction pattern is diamond-groove EVA foam — grippy when wet, comfortable on bare feet, and it doesn’t retain heat the way dark foam sometimes does on summer days.
There are six stainless steel D-rings at the nose for a bungee cargo area, a center carry handle, and a rear fin box that accepts the included single-fin setup. The single fin keeps tracking simple and straightforward — there’s no side-fin configuration to adjust. For a yoga and all-around board, that’s appropriate. You’re not surfing it.
Thurso includes a rolling backpack, which is worth noting because a lot of brands at this price ship a soft duffel that wears out in a season. The rolling bag makes transport from car to water significantly easier, especially if you’re also carrying a pump and paddle.
Who it's for (and who should skip it)
The Tranquility is the right board if you want one iSUP that covers yoga sessions, recreational paddling, and casual fitness use without spending $700–$900. If you’re a beginner or intermediate paddler who does yoga on the water a few times a week and wants a complete kit — board, carbon paddle, pump, bag — this is one of the cleanest value packages in the category. See our best inflatable paddle board guide if you want to see how it stacks up against the broader iSUP field.
Skip it if: you are a serious yoga practitioner who prioritizes maximum platform stability above all else — in that case, look at 35″+ dedicated yoga shapes. Skip it also if you’re over 280–290 lbs and plan to share the board with gear; the 330 lb limit leaves less margin than you might want. And if you already own a quality paddle and pump, you’re paying for kit items you don’t need — a board-only deal from another brand might give you better hardware for the same money.
For most buyers, though, the Tranquility hits the right balance of performance, build quality, and included accessories. The carbon paddle alone justifies a significant portion of the price premium over entry-level kits.
